Self-evaluation

Since I was began as an Assistant Professor at Westminster College in 2008, I have continued to develop my teaching practices, provided service to the college and community, and contributed to research both in my discipline and within our local community. Because my contributions to teaching, service, and research are addressed throughout the portfolio, I will focus here on my goals for the next five years.

Research and Scholarship. My five-year plan is to increase my involvement with community-based and/or discipline-specific research. I see my research and scholarship potentially going in one of two directions. Both interest me. One option, and I realize it doesn’t have to be just one or the other, is to continue my involvement with community-based research. There are many non-profit organizations doing great work locally, and I could continue my efforts in this area. The second option is for me to increase my contribution to discipline-specific research. By this I mean contribute as an author and work to publish in sociology journals such as Gender & Society, Qualitative Sociology, and Teaching Sociology. I would like to contribute to important discussions with my discipline, specifically in the areas of gender and sexuality. To do this, I will need to seek out college-wide grants and sabbatical and/or merit leaves.

Service to the College. My goal is to focus my time and effort on areas that I am most passionate about, including work on “diversity-related” discussions. I have enjoyed my work on the Diversity Series and in gender studies, so I may seek out more opportunities to contribute to discussions and work on our campus.

Teaching. My goal is to continue to work with colleagues on collaborative and interdisciplinary teaching experiences. During my five years of full-time teaching, I have discovered that I am most inspired when the work I am doing is collaborative. I have been fortunate to work with some amazing professors, including Lesa Ellis on a regularly scheduled and co-taught Honors seminar and Inaki Pradanos on a Slow Food and Sustainability May Term Study Experience in Spain and Italy.  I am looking for more opportunities to do this type of collaborative work. Next fall I will be teaching a new learning community that will combine sociology and art.
